THE
FINAL TEST
Tracking:
The terrain should be of even vegetation. The objects should
not exceed the size of a glove and must not be smaller than
clothespin. The object must possess a sufficient amount of
human scent. Tracking is on a strange track, approximately
600 paces long, 60 minutes old, three right angle corners,
four objects.
First, second and third objects are to be placed in the middle
of the first, second and third leg of the track. The fourth
object is to be placed on the end of the track. |
 |
|
|
The dog should be permitted to absorb the scent sufficiently at
the start of the track and should, if possible, track intensively
with a deep nose. The handler must follow in walking pace. Tracking
should be accomplished on a 30 foot long tracking leash or without
the tracking leash. Prior to the start, the handler must report
to the judge and advise the dog will indicate all four objects
by down. Other indications are faulty.
Should the police service dog deviate more than one leash length
during the tracking phase, the exercise will be discontinued.
Search for evidence:
Within a ten minute time limit, the dog must locate and indicate,
four objects which have been dropped in an area measuring 60 by
120 feet. The objects must not be larger than a wallet and must
not be touched by the dog.
The dog and his handler must be out of sight when the objects
are placed. Searching may not begin until the objects have been
in place for 30 minutes. The handler may walk only down the center
line and the dog must search as directed. The object should be
handled for several minutes before being dropped.
Prior to the start, the handler must report to the judge and advise
the dog will indicate all four objects by downing. Other indications
are faulty. During searching, the handler is allowed to encourage
his dog by voice stimulation and can give arm signals to instruct
his dog in which direction he is to search.
